Habits for a Peace Filled New Year
Feeling swamped with all the resolutions to make or resolutions that don’t work info? There’s a lot out there and much of it is well-meaning. But here’s the thing that no one really mentions.
If you want to change, you absolutely can. But it’s not about will-power or forcing yourself to do things that you hate until one day you magically don’t hate it.
It’s about knowing your heart. There’s a part of you that knows what’s best for you, and ultimately what you really, truly want. Peace. Happiness. Joy. Love. Great relationships. Meaningful work.
What that means to you is uniquely yours.
I can’t tell you what is right for you, but I can help you find the answers. Many of us have years of burying our true desires. We’ve lost confidence in trusting and following our inner voice. That means we’re out of practice listening to our inner wisdom.
Learning to listen is a good first step.
Start with a simple, straightforward question. Something that’s been bugging you or a decision you keep revisiting might be a good place to start.
Find a quiet spot where you can clear your mind. Take a few deep breaths and ask yourself the question.
What comes up? Sometimes the answer will be obvious. Often, you’ll get a feeling or a sense about it, but it might not feel definitive.
Remember, this is about feeling as much as mentally “hearing” the answer. That may take a little time because many of us have ignored the signals for a long time. Be patient. You can also ask yourself, why is this hard for me? What if I knew what I wanted? How would that look? How would that feel?
Often, you’ll realize the answer. I sometimes feel like it was so obvious; in hindsight, it amazes me that I couldn’t see it.
Once you get the answer, what then?
What will it take to make the change? Again, start small. For example, if you are dealing with a health-related issue, what resources do you have that can help? Do you want or need to go with traditional medicine, some integrative methods or a combination of both? Is there someone you can turn to for guidance?
Take the first next step. Many of us go all in because we genuinely want to make a change that’s going to be good for us. That’s how I’ve done it too. It can work, but if you go against the guidance you received, often it’s a recipe for disappointment.
We try to take 10 steps at once and end up frustrated. Being cautious and intentional is the best way to go.
The best next step.
Even huge changes like losing weight, getting a new job, or changing the dynamic in an important relationship can be done one small step at a time. The key is to keep checking in with that inner wisdom.
Step one may be finding a resource you need. Do that. Don’t worry about anything else until that’s done. This isn’t a reason to delay or postpone action. It’s about believing in yourself and the Divine to show up each time you need to know what’s next.
What if this doesn’t work?
Fear can pop up. Sometimes we know what we want and what we need, but our brains are wired to keep us safe and resistance pops up. Buried beliefs about what we deserve, or our worth can make us question what our higher self knows to be true. Trust yourself to do the first action. That makes it easier to listen to your inner guidance and take step two.
Remember, it’s a journey and it’s one worth taking.
